How to read this atlas

The brain shown here is the MNI152 template : an average of 152 healthy adult brains, the reference space most neuroimaging studies report their coordinates in. Structure boundaries come from the Harvard-Oxford cortical and subcortical atlases, which are probabilistic: each was built from 37 manually labelled brains, so a voxel carries a probability of belonging to a structure rather than a certainty.

This atlas shows the maximum-probability labelling at a 25 percent threshold. A voxel is assigned to whichever structure is most likely there, provided that likelihood exceeds one in four. Boundaries are therefore approximate, and the volumes reported for each structure are volumes at that threshold rather than anatomical truth for any individual brain.

Coordinates are given in millimetres in MNI space: x runs left to right (negative is left), y back to front, z bottom to top, with the origin near the anterior commissure.

For education and research. This tool is not a clinical device and must not be used for diagnosis or treatment planning. Individual anatomy varies considerably from the template.
